Spencer Tunick's 'The Base'
Thousands volunteer to strip and pose for a nude art installation in Australia. (Sydney Morning Herald)
'The Base' is one of his most recent works of art carried out on March 1, 2010 at the Sydney, Australia Opera House. Over 5,000 people braved the cold, arriving at 4 a.m. to strip and then follow directions on how to pose for photographer Tunick.
This audio slideshow by the Sydney Morning Herald documents the day and blends interviews with Tunick, installation participants and photographs of similar events from all over the world.
Tunick was commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and says for him the Sydney event represented an embrace between the gay and straight communities. In fact, at one point he told all participants to turn to a neighbor and kiss them, whether they knew the person or not.
All participants are volunteers and Tunick says his installations take as much time as people can stand hanging around together in the buff.
