Second Chance: The Jazz Singer

After taking time off to raise her son, musician Deanna Kirk is back on the stage. First in a series of six portraits of personal transformation. (NYT)

Deanna Kirk has owned two jazz clubs in Manhattan, both called Deanna’s. After the second club closed, Kirk took some time off to have a baby and care for him during his early years.

Now that her son is five and in school, Kirk is back on the stage doing what she loves best – singing jazz. This video profile of Kirk’s life and career is the first in a New York Times six-week series called “Second Chance.”

The series features second-chance stories of individual’s struggles and triumphs and will run weekly through July 14, 2009.
