Crisis in Darfur Expands
The Washington Post powerfully documents the growing humanitarian crisis in eastern Chad, where violence is spilling over from neighboring Darfur, Sudan. Several of the victims of the raiding Janjaweed marauders tell their stories, making vivid the devastation and chaos visited upon the villagers. Viewers expecting to see a refugee camp, teeming with hundreds of yelling Africans scrambling for resources, will be surprised to see the barren miles of sand and scattering of tents…with only a few humans in sight. Crushing boredom seems to be the rule, which conveys the despair of the place. This story is the antithesis of the Hollywood look at this part of the world, going behind the scenes to let the affected people tell their story. In a difficult interview to conduct (and to hear), a woman talks about her rape and aftermath.
