Although Taiwanese people are known for their willingness to eat almost anything, many draw the line at the subject of this National Geographic video — bull penis. One of Taiwan’s most respected chefs prepares a soup made with penis meat, an ingredient considered taboo in many cultures, and serves it to some of Taiwan’s top food critics. It is a challenging endeavor for the chef, the diners, and the viewers of this video.
Seen browsing an outdoor food market in Taipei, the chef first selects penises from a rack of meat “freshly killed today,” then returns to the kitchen to begin the four-hour process required to make it edible. He thoroughly cleans the center of the penis so that the dish won’t taste like urine.
What’s the allure of bull penis? It’s considered to be an aphrodisiac stronger than Viagra, according to the specialist in Chinese medicine who prepares herbs that will compliment the meat. “I guarantee we are going to make them very happy,” says the herbalist. The video’s payoff is the reactions of the guests — especially the faces of the proper-looking Chinese ladies at the table — when the dish is served. The best compliment anyone seems to be able to muster is, “You can’t tell which part of the penis you’re eating.”
